Märchenhotel Braunwald

The last blogpost of our Switzerland series, a full month after we’ve come back.

On our way with alllll our stuff! (Still impressed we did this for 3 kids 4 and under)

For the labor day “long weekend” we finished off our trip with 4 days at the Marchenhotel in Braunwald. I admit I fully got influenced by all the instagram reels which made me want to book this trip approximately 7 days postpartum. We figured it would be a nice way to end the trip after a busy 1.5 weeks with us parenting 3 kids on our own without childcare, so we made the schlep from Lauterbrunnen over to Braunwald.

After our long trip, we made it to the “fairy hotel”. The town of Braunwald is only reachable by funicular, and we were able to send our luggage up to the town. The hotel’s van also met us to pick us up from the funicular station, since the hotel is on the very top of the mountain.

Bunnies and animals all over the property; the aquarium in the elevator to our room; breakfast with a view of the goats; a Stokke newborn insert set up for our dining table; child-height sinks in our room for the kids to wash their hands independently

The owner greeted us at check-in, and we were able to participate in the first dinner at the hotel. We got our own table in the dining hall that would be our table for the duration of our stay, and it was the nicest, most kid-friendly setup with a Stokke chair for the baby and coloring placemats for the toddlers. There were also plenty of toys to bring to the table. We had a delicious 5 course farm-to-table dinner, and then were shown to our room.

The pool, Hobbit hole with little guinea pigs (fun fact: it’s illegal to have only one guinea pig in Switzerland, as they are social animals); kids dinner set-up, baby care set-up; plenty of space for us to hang in our room

We were upgraded to a larger room / suite, which was perfect for our family size. We had our own bedroom and bathroom, and the kids had their own room with bunk beds. We also had a little living area where we could put the baby in. Although staying in Airbnbs is the most convenient for a family our size, it has gotten tiring paying exorbitant cleaning fees for little crumbs left behind. If we can afford it, staying in a hotel with room refreshes everyday where we’re not expected to clean is the ideal.

Llama walks, a giant treehouse / playhouse with high-quality toys in the childcare center; more animals everywhere

The hotel had built-in unlimited childcare from 9 AM – 9 PM and lots of activities that were perfect for our aged kids. They were even able to take the baby if needed. We didn’t want to go on a long hike away from them for a full day so sometimes we just sat outside the (gorgeous) childcare area and read without kids running around. They loved the giant ballpit, treehouse play area, gorgeous pool, and outdoor playgrounds. During mealtime, the kids had their own kid-friendly mealtime, but the childcare workers could lead them to us if they missed us.

The pool (indoor and outdoor); evening activities including waiting for the giant bouncehouse to inflate; outdoor activities

One of the days we did a long “kid-friendly” “stroller-friendly” hike to a little restaurant overlooking the Alps. Of course it was another Swiss hike so while technically true, it was still a bit long for us – but it was still a gorgeous walk.

We enjoyed the goats roaming around the property, all the kid-oriented activities, and the delicious food. 4 days and 3 nights were plenty for us as we still got a little itchy after being in an all-inclusive the entire time, but we realized that the European kinderhotels are the best. Everything was such high quality, and we loved being in the middle of the mountains rather than on a beach resort. We are already plotting our next Kinderhotel visit, perhaps to the Dolomites or Austria! This was a wonderful place to end our trip; it felt like Disney without the crowds, as everything was SO kid friendly and the hotel’s capacity was not huge.
