Catskills Mountains

Happy new year, everyone! Thanks for following along as I documented all my 2016 travels, but now a new year starts and real life begins. I will be traveling a lot less this year as we are currently saving up for a few things – plus I’m saving up my vacation time for some great summer traveling as a  big post-grad (me)/pre-grad (M) trip.

Since we had new year’s weekend as a long weekend, M and I decided to go up to rent a cabin in the Catskills for a day and escape the craziness of New York’s NYE, as usual. Since M still works crazy days, I thought we were going to go up for just a day – but he surprised me with an entire 3-day weekend as part of a Christmas gift! As much as I love traveling with friends, it was great kicking off the new year with a nice couple trip.

We rented from Hertz for the duration of the trip and used AirBnB to rent cabins. As it was M’s first time using Airbnb, we both got discounts! One of the owners cancelled on him last minute, so Airbnb also gave us a discount so we were able to book a really nice BnB on the second night. Both were in the middle of the Catskills, and perfectly rustic.

Much of the time was spent relaxing. We completed a few scenic hikes – not an easy feat as everything was snowed over and icy, and neither of us have snow boots! We loved Kaaterskill Falls and Dibble’s Quarry the most – both very accessible hikes, especially when there’s no snow.

We followed the Hudson Art Trail from Thomas Cole’s house to various famous points of interests in the mountains that inspired the artists of the Hudson River School. Even though everything was covered in snow, each point really was breathtaking.

On our last day, we went snowtubing (neither of us ski) and had a wonderfully relaxing spa day complete with couple’s massages. This was our first time getting real massages as a treat and it certainly was wonderful being pampered as a once-in-a-few-years type of thing. A perfect way to start our fourth calendar year together!
